6-15-2013 ICA Lake Monroe

On 6-15-2013 the ICA held the 4th points tournament on Lake Monroe. 27 boats showed up for this tourney. This was my first time at this lake and i did not pre-fish it at all. It has a reputation as a great flathead lake so i decided to target flatheads only for this tourney. This was a mistake. My son Brandon Wallace fished this tourney with me. I made a game plan before hand. We got there pretty early and started catching more bluegill on the docks. When it was time to start i left for the deeper part of the lake and some coves i planned to fish. When it got dark i decided to take the ride down to the dam and fish deep. It took a while and on the way i noticed the thermacline was at about 17 foot. So i hit a cove down by the dam hoping there may be fish close to the deeper water. I soon realized that this was not a good idea and decided to go back to the first place i looked at in shallower water. So we made the long boat ride back up the lake. I found an area i marked alot of fallen trees in and fished there with no luck. We had what looked like a nasty storm about to hit us so i decided to stay close but just beach the front of the boat on this hill right next us and use the hill as a wind break. We threw out gills all around us and sat there for the rest of the night. About 3:30 am we get a run and i can tell its a decent fish. I get it in and its a nice 17.2lb flathead. I threw another gill out right there and within 20 minutes had another really good run but i missed that fish. I moved around a little staying right on the bank and just could not hook up into another fish. At weigh in we found out Marry Jane and Terry Lee Holding caught a nice 29lb flathead about 30 minutes before it was time to head in. Had they not caught that fish ours would have won big fish. From what we could tell most of the fish came from the opposite direction we went up in the really shallow part of lake.
