Where We’ve Been: The History of Minn Kota Motors

The Minn Kota electric trolling motor began its life in 1934 in Fargo, North Dakota. Mr. O. G. Schmidt, inventor of the trolling motor, was known to be a man of many diverse ideas. Prior to the trolling motor, Mr. Schmidt invented, produced and sold a copper soldering torch from his home in Wheatland, North Dakota. Due to its success, manufacturing operations were then moved to Fargo. Because of its proximity to the MINNesota – North DaKOTA border, Mr. Schmidt named the business The Minn Kota Manufacturing Company.

In July of 2011, LakeMaster® was acquired by Johnson Outdoors Marine Electronics Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson Outdoors Inc. and the parent company to the brands of Minn Kota® motors and accessories; Humminbird® fishfinders and Cannon® downriggers. As a result of this exciting acquisition, all of the LakeMaster HD charts and patent pending technology are now available exclusively for use with Humminbird GPS fish finders.

LakeMaster Lake Maps was the former brand name for all High-Definition hydrographic charts developed for the fishing industry by WayPoint Technologies, Inc. and the bathymetry survey company ProMap Technologies, Inc. The Company was founded in 1992 by Mike Wood as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) consulting and application development firm. Since then we have evolved into the recognized leader in inland lake chart development and are based in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Mike Wood, an avid fisherman, identified an opportunity to combine highly accurate GIS data for inland lakes and waterways with increasingly advanced Global Positioning System (GPS) and sonar technologies to create accurate electronic lake charts for use in the boat and on the ice by professional and recreational anglers. The Company’s first product was a PC-based program known as LakeMaster ContourPro, introduced in 1999. The original PC product was later replaced with LakeMaster Contour Elite which helps the angler prepare a detailed search for all species of fish and their locations using LakeMaster Charts and multiple search criteria such as depth, slope, sun exposure, aspect and more.

By 2001, leading fishing sonar manufacturers began incorporating GPS into their high-end fish finders. LakeMaster capitalized on this opportunity by launching the LakeMaster brand of digital electronic inland U.S. lake charts on SD cards. Today, LakeMaster is one of the most recognized inland lake charting company in the United States, not only providing anglers with incredible high-definition charts but leading in revolutionary on-the-water chart technology such as the patent pending Water Level Offset and Highlight Depths tools which allow the angler to adjust and highlight the depth contour levels of their chart real-time right on their Humminbird unit. LakeMaster continues down the innovation pathway with the all new Follow the Contour feature that for the first time successfully links the Minn Kota iPilot Link electric trolling motor with Humminbird fishfinder technology allowing the angler the first true hands free fishing experience. This patent pending Johnson Outdoors technology will safely guide the angler’s boat along a preselected depth contour line or the angler can offset that track any distance from the selected depth or the shoreline itself.

LakeMaster will continue to provide the most accurate, detailed and complete electronic lake charts in the industry today. We have developed unrivaled proprietary on-the-water survey techniques for acquiring high definition digital marine bathymetry. We then employ internally developed data processing technology to create detailed high definition lake charts in the LakeMaster originated, one-foot depth increments.
